Joseph Francis Coates was born in 1929 in Brooklyn. After four years at the National Science Foundation (1970-1974), he worked for five years at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. He left to form his own consulting company, J. F. Coates Inc., in 1979. Vary Taylor Coates (b. 1930) received a B.A. from Furman University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from George Washington University.
